Best Love Songs of the Past 40 Years

So, my best friend’s parents are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary next week. BSG would like to make a compilation CD of the top love songs for every year they’ve been married (opinion only, not billboard). Some of the suggestions I’ve given her are:

At Last by Etta James
Grow Old Along With Me by Mary Chapin Carpenter
You’re Still You by Josh Groban
Feels Like Forever by Joe Cocker
Lullaby by Dixie Chicks
When I Said I Do by Clint Black and Lisa Hartman Black
You Can Leave Your Hat On by Joe Cocker
Let’s Get It On by Marvin Gaye
The Very Thought of You by (take your pick) Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald ~~~ technically older than the 40 year mark, but how can you skip Frankie?! ~~~ also it’s being sung by new standards artists, so maybe we can sneak it in?
Come Away With Me by Norah Jones
Fever by Peggy Lee
When You Say Nothing at All by Alison Krauss

For some reason, she didn’t really care for these suggesions:

You’re the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly by Delbert McClinton
Why Don’t We Get Drunk (and Screw) by Jimmy Buffett

We’re hoping to make a 2-disc set for them this weekend and would like an assortment of all musical genres. So ~ what are some of your favorite love songs?

  1. I love Etta James. She’s one of my favorites. Alright, let’s see what else…Wonderful Tonight by Eric ClaptonWhen A Man Loves A Woman by Percy SledgeNatural Woman by Aretha FranklinKeeper of the Stars by Tracy ByrdLeather and Lace by Stevie Nicks with Don HenleyBed of Roses by Bon JoviWhen I See You Smile by Bad EnglishLove of A Lifetime by FirehouseHave You Ever Really Loved A Woman by Bryan Adams (which I love, but you could go with (Everything I Do) I Do It For You)I could go on and on and on, but I’ll stop…oh, well, except I need to add The Way You Look Tonight by Frank Sinatra..and since Michael Buble just redid it, it qualifies, right? LOLAlright, I’m done. HUGS!Holly

  2. Oh, these are good ones! I love <>When I See You Smile<> ~ it’s an all time favorite. It was redone by Uncle Sam for <>Touched by an Angel<> a few years ago and I listened to it over and over (and over) again. I love Michael Buble ~ I think we definitely need to keep him in mind too ~ and since he’s redoing all the great standards, I think they all should qualify 🙂Some of these titles bring back such great memories. It’s amazing how a song can transport us back into time, isn’t it? I listen to 80’s rock and I find myself cranking the radio and voila, I’m a teenager again. Thanks Holly!

  3. Oh, I totally agree. It’s so amazing how you’ll hear a song on the radio and suddenly you’re not here anymore, you’re somewhere in the past: reliving your first kiss, the first fight you had with your husband, the first time you looked across the room and saw the man you knew you’d spend the rest of your life with.Gosh, so many memories. LOL It’s the same for me with 80’s music.

  4. Love Etta James At Last. That was the song Joey and I danced too. Unchained Melody by the Rightous BrothersEverything I do, I Do it For you- Bryan AdamsHAve a Little Faith in Me Take my breath Away -BerlinTruly Madly Deeply- Savage GardenI like the way you love me by brenton woodReasons by earth wind and fire. sigh…
